wonderwash update
A month into the Wonderwash experiment, we’ve now paid the little machine off, even with my turncoat run to the laundromat after getting behind at John’s mom’s visit. So far, I’m pretty pleased. The big pros: Money saved, obviously. Admittedly, a sort of quasi-romantic feeling of being in touch with the world and its rhythms as I hunch around our tiny bathroom each...

new england hippie boarding school plays tennis
Me [wading through a sea of questionably appropriate Converse and settling upon a pair of moccasins]: I'm sorry, but you're going to have to borrow some shoes. You can't wear those on the court.
Girl: Oh, OK.
Me [leading her back to the closet]: Sorry, they're a little gross. They're just ones that got left here. But I guess it isn't any worse than bowling alley shoes.
Girl: I don't go to the bowling alley.
Me: I just wish we had socks to give with them.
Girl: I don't wear socks.
Me: Well, um, I guess I hope whoever had these shoes before did.

Also,
so glad I told the librarians at my local branch that I’m in library school, otherwise there’s no way I could be a mid-twenties childless woman checking out The Babysitters Club #91: Claudia and the First Thanksgiving without giving myself away as a total creeper.

all'amatriciana →
This article on one of my favorite restaurant dishes really pleased me because it gives a recipe almost exactly like what I worked out on my own after eating all’amatriciana a couple of times at Pasta E Basta, though I used a combination of fresh tomatoes from the farm share, tomato paste, and sun-dried tomatoes that Beca sent me in a care package. I don’t tend to have a lot of...

how to avoid the dry cleaners →
I have very little sense of smell, which I tend to think of as more of a super power than a handicap. But, as I learned from John and his mother this weekend, there’s a distinct thrift shop smell I’d never heard of before that can only be described, with a look of distaste from each, as “homeless.” Here are some ideas on how to banish the scent that I’ve apparently...

When I am down on the value of my liberal arts Great Books education because of my $8-an-hour job, I am comforted that I can, at the very least, trot out lines of John Milton with surprising accuracy in everyday conversation while washing the dishes. Sure, I may have a dinky job, but as Johnny M. reminds us, “They also serve who only stand and wait.”
