About myself:

  1. People talk about how librarianship isn’t about just sitting around reading books all day, but since my library moved at the beginning of the year, our traffic has been pretty low and I’ve been doing just that. What’s more, it’s not nearly as fun as I imagined.
  2. I am afraid of pretty much everything, but sometimes I get fed up and do something unexpected, like attend a college where I know no one, or move to Africa for six months.
  3. About the only thing I never was afraid about was marrying John. That was, for sure, the right move. The rest just follows.
  4. A year or so ago, while J was at a conference in Korea, I got really into watching Grey’s Anatomy and crying uncontrollably. This does not strike me as the healthiest habit, but I have now watched all the seasons.
  5. My little sister and I keep getting closer as we grow up, and I love it.
  6. J and I are going on a walking tour of Yorkshire in May. I’m supposed to be training, and I’m not.
  7. I really didn’t like Lord of the Rings the first time I read it (I was trying to impress J). But for some reason they’ve really been growing on me lately, especially since J just finished reading The Fellowship of the Ring aloud to me at bedtimes. I guess maybe I didn’t get the melancholy before?
  8. For my first winter in New England, I was convinced I would freeze and die.
  9. I hate politics. I used to think I was too busy for politics, but now I admit I don’t care / get immediately enraged (depending on the issue). Neither response makes me a great thinker on such issues.
  10. In recent weeks, I have turned into a preschooler. I now go to bed at 7:30 and eat lots of pudding cups and Goldfish. I think in order to have a baby you must first Become the Baby?
  11. As a result, I have had no real interests for about a month while morning sickness eats my life, but I have averaged a book every two days.

Haley’s questions:
1. What’s your favorite musical (I know, how to choose, right?!) If you don’t like musicals…oh, wait, that’s impossible because we couldn’t be friends.

Um, I don’t like musicals. Unless you count the ones friends appear in (Brigadoon!) or Disney movies like Lion King.

2. Who is your patron saint or who would you choose if you don’t have one?

St. John the Evangelist. I chose him without much thought because he’s the patron saint of writers and was also my mom’s patron saint. I did not realize that I would then be called “John” during my confirmation.

3. What literary character do you wish you were friends with in real life?

4. Are there any movies that you like better than the book they’re based on?

5. What kind of monster/animal did you think lived under your bed when you were little?

6. If you could live in any era, what would it be and why?

7. Dogs or cats?
Dogs. I like other people’s cats just fine, but I don’t think I need one myself.

8. Mountains or beach?

9. If you were trapped on a desert island with books from only one author, who would it be? (And no, you can’t just say “the Bible.”)
C.S. Lewis, maybe — my burnout after studying him at Oxford in ‘07 seems to be lifting, finally.

10. Your favorite book when you were a child.
Blueberries for Sal was my first favorite. Kerplink, kerplunk.

11. Would you rather never be able to drink coffee again or never be able to eat dessert again?
Never drink coffee again. I can’t, really, unless it’s decaf, or I get a wicked stomachache.

My questions:
1. If you could live in a movie, which would you choose?
2. What aspect of your life now would seem most unexpected to ten-year-old you?
3. What is a name you love but would never use on a baby?
4. What are you proud of?
5. Which two words/people do you always confuse?
6. What book can you just not get through?
7. What was your most recent irresponsible purchase?
8. What is your earliest memory?
9. What’s the last song you turned up loud in your car?
10. What’s the book you wish everyone would read?
11. What’s your favorite time of year?*
