“The Weight” always makes me think of freshman year with Megan, and particularly driving through sunny south Georgia countryside on the way to and from school.

[circa 2004, Porter dorm, Mercer University]

So, this lady is getting married. We met on our first day at Mercer, when we found out we were rooming together. I forgave her for liking The Whisper of the River, and we promptly spent our freshman year laughing at each other and nursing along the best betta fish of all time, Val Kilmer, who lived in a large wine glass and died in the CRV’s cup holder.

I haven’t met her fellow, but I fervently hope theirs will be a house full of laughter.

Layne: Hey Ms. Connor, what does tyrannous mean?
Me: Read me the sentence.
Layne: “Alas that love, so gentle in his view / Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!”
Me: Well, what does the word “tyrannous” sound like?
Layne: Uh…like it’s…terriffic?
Me: Layne, do you think that “terrific and rough” go together? Does Romeo think that love is “terrific?”
Layne: No. It kind of sounds like a dinosaur.
Me: Yes! Good! And how does Tyrannosaurus Rex translate?
Layne: What?
Me: What does it mean?
Layne: It means…dinosaur?
Me: Use the dictionary, Layne.
Layne: No. No. I got this. So, does it mean that love is all rough…like a dinosaur?
Me: Oh, dear God.
Layne: I think it would have been better if I had just used the dictionary.
Me: For both of us.
from my exceedingly funny freshman year roommate Megan, who is teaching in rural south Georgia this year

I miss these dear ladies.
